What Happened to My Fiddle Leaf Fig?

Before you launch into reading this post, I should let you know that my husband advised me not to post these photos for fear of disgusting you poor readers.  Not being one who likes to be told what to do, I'm going to go ahead and post these gross pictures.

Here's what I found growing in my fiddle leaf fig when I went to water it today.
These pictures don't do it justice, but this fungus is flourescent yellow.  I pulled back the Spanish moss to investigate further.

I'm so surprised to have fungus growing in the pot.  I only water about once per week and we live in a super-dry climate.
I've never been a fan of houseplants because they seem dirty to me.  The plants I've had always seem to attract bugs and now THIS!  What would you do?  I've taken the moss off and I'm tempted to maybe just let the plant die : (

  1. GAAAAHHHH!!! I would've probably unintentionally killed it by now anyways, so I don't know the answer to your conundrum...but ew. That stuff gives me the heebee geebees. But don't think a little fungus can scare off us tough readers! (c:

  2. Are they mushrooms? Or is it slime mold? It's hard to tell from photos. See what happens with the stuff--it might dry out and go away.

  3. How weird. I won't even mention what they look like - teehee. :) You've kept it alive way longer than I ever could. Maybe there is some fix for it on google?

  6. That's...gross...and...reminds me of something else. I'd call the nursery you bought it from and ask them.

  8. I'm no help. I hate indoor plants for the same reason as you... I have 3 indoor dog and hate indoor plants because I think they are dirty and gross:)

  9. OK, so I actually got mushrooms growing in my palm a few weeks ago. I asked my mom who is like Green Thumb of the year what to do about it. She says it doesn't mean that you're over-watering. Mushrooms have to have really good soil to grow without being introduced to the environment, so you must be doing something right. i would put the moss back over it and let them be.

Also, get a plant tester that can test the ph and water level of the plant. This has helped me a lot. I just stick it in before I water to make sure that its' actually dry and not just dry on the top layer before watering.

  10. I am the official black thumb of our family...as in i can kill succulents, but I'm with the other ladies. Take it back to the nursery you got it from. I know Lowes will replace them for a year if you have your receipt.

  11. I don't do house plants. The cat just eats them all anyway!

  12. Such a bummer, Suzy! You'll have to let us know what you find out about that crazy fungus.

I'm cracking up that so many of you think plants are dirty! Plants are actually SO good for your living environment! They make the air healthier to breathe and have a ton of positive attributes. I wish I could keep more alive in my house! :)

  13. Yikes...I know what you mean about plants being dirty for indoors - thoughts like that cross my mind too. Or just bugs - I'm sure they bring bugs with it. I would call the nursery on this too and inquire what might have happened - I'm sure they'll have a suggestion for you.
