Target....who knew?

I have a Target shopping problem.  I go in for laundry detergent and walk out with a cart full of stuff.

Can you relate?

I was browsing the Target website because they are having a sale on decor this week, buy one, get one 50% off.  I was surprised at the cute upholstered chairs they have.  I'm looking for a set of chairs for my living room and I would gladly take any of these:

These velvet chairs are $139, but the second one would only be $70.

I like the pattern on this one.

Hello ikat.  Want to come home with me?

This tufting is pretty too.

Settees are popular right now.  I could even see this being used at a dining table or as a banquet.

Would you buy a chair from Target?  I'm a little wary to buy a chair without sitting on it.  Due to the price, I'm not expecting the highest quality; but at this point in my life, with three little kids, it doesn't make sense to me to spend a lot on furniture.

I'm considering two of the gray velvet chairs to flank a side table, but I really love that ikat chair too.  Decisions, decisions!

Purchasing Power

I have been thinking about these metal barstools for the island in my kitchen.

They can be found at the Home Decorator's Collection.  (Has anyone else noticed that Home Decorator's has had some really cute things lately?  I hadn't seen the catalog in a few years and I was really impressed).  They would replace the clunky wood ones that I now have.

However, I have been thinking about money and how I spend it a lot lately.  This all stems from an email my husband got several weeks ago from his employer instructing him to stay home on a certain day and wait to receive a phone call telling him if he would be laid off or would keep his job.

Waiting for that phone call was sooooo stressful.  In the time leading up to the big call, I had a million thoughts going through my head.  Would I have to get a "real" job?  Would we have to move?  Could the kids continue to attend all of the activities they enjoy? Etc., etc.

Thankfully, he kept his job.  But this made me realize that his income is not stable and could be taken away almost immediately.  Sometimes decorating can be expensive and purchases can be frivolous.  I want to concentrate on living with what I have and adding small things (hello Craigslist!) that I can makeover myself and that are meaningful to my family and me.

So, as much as I love them, I probably will not be purchasing those bar stools.  Darn!  I can already tell that frugal living is not going to be easy!!!

Anyone have any frugal living tips?

New Chairs

I thought I would share a couple of chairs with you.  I got these at a garage sale a couple of months ago and they have been waiting for a makeover.

The pair set me back only $16!  The lady selling them told me they were "Duncan Phyfe."  So, I promptly went home and researched Duncan on the internet.  Look what I found selling on Ebay for $3,000:

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to store these in my garage and accidentally crash my car into one of them:

There goes my $2,992 profit!

C's New Chair

As you all know, I have been hard at work redecorating C's room. The latest addition is a new chair to go with her newly painted desk.

Here's the chair I started with:
My neighbor was having a garage sale last weekend and wanted $50 for her. Uhhh, no thanks! Big K went back later on his own and bought her for $15. That man can bargain with the best of them!

C chose this fabric to go with her new aqua walls:

I took the yucky old tapestry fabric off the chair and spray painted her a glossy white.

Here's how she looks with her new fabric:

And at her new desk:

I know the style of the desk and chair are pretty different, but I still think they look good for a 6-year old's room. Good fabric choice C! I probably wouldn't have picked it myself, but I'm pleased with how it turned out. What do you think?

Welcome to Saved by Suzy

I'm so glad you stopped by to check out my new endeavor. As if I wasn't busy enough as mom to three crazy girls (ages 2, 6, and 8) and 2 lovely Golden Retrievers, home decor store employee, attorney, and volunteer, I have decided to dive into a career as a blogger and furniture refinisher.

This blog will follow my sometimes inspired and other times not-so-inspired forays into DIY home decorating, focusing on furnishing your home on the cheap. My favorite thing is to pick up vintage pieces of furnture and "save" them by giving them a "makeover" as my 6-year old likes to say. I will feature things I have done in my own home, things I have found in blogland, and also items I have for sale.

There's nothing I LOVE more than a good before and after. Here's the before:

Here's the after:

More to come on these chairs. Here's some other upcoming stuff: how to make and hang your own curtains, awesome vintage chalkboard school desk for sale, how to find the best thrifty stuff, lots of before and afters, and maybe even some cute pics of the kids.

Be sure to follow me so you don't miss anything exciting! What would you like to see on this blog??
