I found this buffet on Craig's List and picked it up yesterday for $50. I think the shape is beautiful.
But why the buyer's remorse? The veneer is coming off the top and there is some other damage. I guess, it just seems like a lot of work to restore! Also, I see other people's great finds in blogland where they find a beautiful antique sitting curbside for free or at the Salvation Army for $2.99. That doesn't usually happen to me! I have to pay.
Would you have bought this for $50?

I would definitely buy this for $50! I think you still got a great bargain. I'm with you though, I never find the free antiques on the side of the road...so for me $50 is a great deal!
Yes, $50 for a large piece that is in good condition is a bargain to me!!!
Good luck on it! I just got a old side table that I want to re-do for my babies nursery. I want to set books on it by our rocking chair. So I am glad I stumbled upon your blog... looks like you have some good ideas!!

I totally would have bought that! I haven't seen any like that for less than $200 in my area! A little glue and paint and that'll be a gorgeous piece! Can't wait to see what you do with it!!
It has beautiful lines and I would have bought it for sure! I think it's a great buy!h
Oh yes! Without a doubt I would have bought that fabulous piece for $50! I am in the same boat--I NEVER luck into those "side-of-the-road" treasures! I think this will be spectacular when you're done and I can't wait to see it!
Definitely! Its gorgeous. Try some Citrus Strip (a non toxic stripper you can get at Home Depot)to get that nasty veneer off, then either stain the wood underneath or paint it a vintagey color with chalk paint. Its a prize!
$50? Sure! And you will do wonders with it. If you're really not sure what to do with it - it looks like it would be a great potting station or a cute buffet in an outdoor area. Do your thang Suzy!!
I'm not sure if I would have bought it, but I know I am going to call you before I buy any furniture! You always find great stuff and make it even better!
I think it's a great find. Yes, it may take a little more work but it will be so gorgeous!!
I would definitely buy this beautiful buffet! I have a handy husband who would know what to do with the veneer. So many possibilities!
I would have. But I feel the same way. Everyone else seems to find antique treasures in the garbage! I habit of buying pretty things without looking at condition. I just bought a mid-century record player cabinet and the leg fell off when I got it home. If I'd given it a good shake, I probably could have noticed that!
I had a piece I finished awhile ago that will be posting tomorrow that was peeling veneer and I just ripped it off on the areas that were peeling and painted over it. Some pieces are just so old that its nice not to cover that all up.
I think this looks amazing for $50!! It's really a great piece with a lot of personality!
In the Hammock Vintage
It'll be your best save yet. Can't wait to see the after. I miss you!
What a beautiful buffet I just bought one last summer in almost perfect shape at a yard sale for $35 so no I would be in big trouble if I brought another one home!! Cant wait to see what you do with it I had intentions of painting it white and distressing it and he told me no!! Men just dont understand he thinks it needs to be left alone! GRRR...
I think it's a beautiful piece for $50.00 and if I had the room for it I would have bought it! I think it will be a real beauty when you are finished restoring it.

I would definitely have purchased this. As you saw with my roadside rescue I covered the damaged veneer on top with book pages. Sometimes you can even peel off the veneer and the wood underneath is solid and you can either paint or stain it. Sometimes these pieces take a little imagination, but I'm sure you will make it beautiful again.
I would have! $50 is really a great price for that sturdy a piece of furniture....you could either sand the veneer completely off or fill it in with some wood putty and paint it.....that's what I would do!
Yeah, probably would have done the same...and probably would've been backpeddling as I saw how much work was going to be involved! (c: But it is going to be absolutely a show stopper when you get done with it, the dimensions and detailing are awesome!
Paint it, have a piece of marble cut or find a coffee table in the right size for cheap (another of those "never happens to me" things) and sell it for $$$ as a kitchen island for a much bigger kitchen than mine!
Sounds like a good deal to me...bet it will be a beauty when you are done with it. Laurel
