Help Me Paint a Dresser

Are your kids opinionated?  Mine definitely have opinions on everything, from how I should cook dinner to what they want to wear.  As long as it's not harmful or too annoying to me, I generally let them do what they want (within reason and rules of course!).  It's not going to kill anybody if they wear mismatching clothes or have wild hair.

Of course they have opinions on how they want their rooms to look.  So far, I've been able to steer the younger two towards something that both of us like.  My oldest has requested a blue and green room.  I like this combo, but she wants her dresser to be a mix of blue and green.  I'm not sure how to paint this dresser without it looking too crazy.  I think I'm having a hard time figuring this out, because I'm really just a solid-color kind of girl.

She wants a bright peacock blue, like this vanity, and also a bright green.  She's a tomboy and doesn't like anything too girly.

I'm thinking something along the lines of this room for her:

Will you help me figure out how to paint this dresser blue and green?

Stripes are an option.  But what kind of stripes?

Diagonal?

Only on the sides?

Various horizontal thicknesses?

Off-center vertical?

Thick vertical?

Or I could paint the body one color and the drawers another color...kind of like this?

These are the exact colors she likes....I guess they don't look too carnival-ish together.

I love O'verlays, but have yet to try them.  Maybe I could do a blue base and then paint the O'verlays green?  I have to measure to see if they even fit on this dresser.

Help a girl out!  What should I do?

i like the idea of stripes. that one from kfd is nice because though it has colors it has white as a neutral to help calm it down, so that is something to consider. could you also just paint it solid say bright green and get some fab teal glass knobs?

I'd do either body painted a different color from the drawers or solid color on the whole piece with the other color on the knobs. I love those colors together. I have a lime green freezer up against peacock blue walls--it's straight out of Ballard Designs to put those colors together.

My vote would be for the stripes (probably blue, green and white to break it up) or all peacock blue with some really awesome green glass knobs like these: http://www.amazon.com/Cupboard-Cabinet-Knobs-K15-Hardware/dp/B004J8Q9RM

I'm leaning towards the diagonal stripes or the solid boy with a different color for the drawer fronts. Whatever you end up with, I know it will be fabulous!

My vote would be for an ombre feel, transitioning from green to blue. Like #9 from this link:

I like the overlay idea! Especially with the shape of the dresser.

Do you think she'd go for green and blue inside the drawers instead? You could find some fun scrapbook paper to decoupage inside....maybe add fun blue and green knobs, then you would have a solid color piece, but she has some say as well. Good luck!

I like the body one color and the drawers another. Sarah Richardson has done that a few times and it looks really nice, I think.

Somebody might have said this, but what if you painted the top half light green and the bottom half peacock blue? maybe? no?

what about an ombre? I also like the vertical stripes.

What fun choices, Suzy!! I loved the blue/green/white stripes in varied widths, but truly any of those ideas would look great.

So many great options... how to choose? Love Carolyn's idea of the ombre that goes from blue to green, or the body one color and the drawers another. What are your daughter's thoughts?! What fun....

Here is my opinion if you need one more :)
I would paint it two colors and then play up the trim on the dresser with a third color.....who knows maybe you can find some stripped knobs. Okay stop reading and get to creating I can't wait to see the finished project.

What you do would depend on how soon she might grow tired of it and also considering the time/work you put into it. It is a good size piece. You could paint the top of the dresser and every alternate draw a different color and also paint the knobs on each draw the other color (blue on green, green on blue) if you are keeping the knobs. I have been meaning to try overlays - those are a good option, too and would bring in a different pattern. This is exciting - love the colors she picked.
