The One Room Challenge: Week 4

It's Wednesday.  That means it's time for another installment of the One Room Challenge!  Fifteen bloggers have been challenged to complete a room within six weeks.  We are now on Week Four, over half way done.

I am working on my three-year old daughter's room.  The process has been going along pretty smoothly...up until this week.  This week I had a couple of project failures, but some successes as well.

Let's start with a positive.  My friend Cindy is a thrifter/picker/junker extraordinaire.  She can find all kinds of cool things that can be transformed.  She brought me a few items this week for Mary's room.  One of which is this yellow mirror:

A few coats of white spray paint later:

I also had some embroidery hoops that I hung on the wall filled with different scraps of fabric.
This is a simple and inexpensive project that can cover a lot of wallspace.  I think it looks cute too!

Don't they look like colorful polka dots?  I found a few more hoops at the thrift store that I'm planning on adding to the wall.  I was just waiting for some new fabric to arrive in the mail.

Speaking of fabric, look what arrived on Tuesday!

I'll be bringing some of these to the seamstress this week for throw pillows.

I originally thought this huge picture was a failure, but it has started to grow on me.  I like how the black and white tones down the brightness of the other colors in the room.  Best of all, Mary LOVES the big picture of herself.

Look here for a tutorial on how I made this picture.

We also tried to hang the headboard using flush mount hardware.  I think hanging the headboard is more difficult than actually making it.  As you can see, I still need to straighten and lower the headboard.  Hopefully that will happen this week.

Here's a failure that will be repainted this week or next:

Painting the orange line was not as easy as I thought it was going to be.  Steady hands are not one of my better qualities.  I think it makes the dresser look a bit busy too...especially with everything else going on in the room.

One more positive.  I received this cute picture in the mail on Tuesday. I bought it from the Paper Sparrow on Etsy.
Mary is obsessed (to put it mildly) with "baby jaguars."  She loves all things leopard/cheetah print and we all must refer to her as "Baby Jaguar."  If we call her "Mary," she'll probably ignore us.  Did you see the jacket she's wearing in the huge print above?  When I hung up the picture of her in her jacket, she started jumping up and down and cheering, "Look!  It's baby jaguar!"

In case you missed the earlier posts, here they are:

It's looking SO good Suzy! You should be very proud of your work. And with the pillows this is going to be one awesome room. And I see the chipper fabric in there - hooray! Can't wait to hear about the pillows and construction work. You're doing great and that Etsy print is adorable.

I need a friend like Cindy! The room is looking so fantastic! I am not surprised Mary loves it...what girl wouldn't? On hanging a headboard, try making a z-bracket. I like to use a piece of z-channel (not sure if that is the name)that is sold in the door section of HD. Cut to length, one side goes facing up on the wall..the other side goes facing down on the headboard...slip it into place. I can e-mail you if you need more...it is fool proof!

I'm so happy you're using the robot fabric! I love it. The mirror looks amazing, love the fabric hoops. What will you do to the nightstand? Paint over the orange? The room is looking great.
Oh, does your daughter watch Go Diego Go? I was wondering if that's where she got the baby jaguar reference. My daughter loves that show.

Suzy i LOVE those fabrics. I'm sure the pillows will add the perfect touch to her room.
Glad to see your mirror turned out so well.
Do you think you'll repaint the dresser all white? I still think some fun, colourful drawer knobs would be fun.
Anyway, great progress!

it looks AMAZING so far! i love it all!!!! and here is my trick for painting the insets on drawers... i paint the inset color first and then paint the top color, carefully not getting in the grooves that were already painted the accent color- that works better for me than trying to paint in the grooves.

Your super sized photo is SUPER! I love the idea and will probably try it myself (maybe minus the mod podge:) But I agree that I like the vintage effect too! Great job, love everything and can't wait to see it finished.

I cannot quit laughing at your daughter for wanting to be called baby jaguar! I love it, hahaha! And I love her coat, too. Way to go, Mary! I do understand the "Go Diego, Go" reference, too.

Suzy, I am loving watching this space come together!! All your fabric choices are so fresh! The story about Mary's obsession with jags/cheets made me smile and made me miss having a three year old around. Can't wait to see the dresser next week.

It looks so great Suzy! I love all the little touches that make your daughter's heart sing - like the photo of her and the baby jaguar! Your girl sounds like so much fun - her obsession with baby jaguar's is adorable!

The embroidery hoop polkadots look AWESOME! It's exciting to hear there will be more because they look so great in the room. Sorry about the orange stripes :( would a glaze or a watered down acrylic would work since you could wipe off the excess? Or back to white would look good!!

omg, great stuff in this post--your daughter only answering to "baby jaguar" made me giggle. The hoops are a great way to incorporate all that fabric.

I bought fabric for my dining room project and now who knows when I'll get to use it. It just sits there mocking me.
